It’s sad that it seems many people care more about this African lion than they care for African people.

Reviews are one thing (like the gummy bear one on amazon) but holy crap that’s absurd.

I’m troubled by this. Sure, by the sounds of it, the guy did something that wasn’t legal and awful in many people’s opinions.
But, what if it had been legal. Does mere disagreement with his action make it ok for people to try to ruin his life?

So where else rates businesses? Since yelp is now worthless, it’s be nice to have somewhere to find out how good a business is before patronizing them.

This. I care about animals, conservation, and support responsible hunting too, but this whole thing just plays into modern society’s love of faux-charity caring. Jumping in on the bandwagon of caring to show off on Facebook, but never really doing anything substantial to make a difference in any cause.

That’s a bigger issue, but also people in the various countries in Africa don’t care about African people either. The amount of corruption that exists is insane, the powerful will starve their people and make behind the scenes deals to make sure they DON’T have water to line their own pockets. It’s truly sad, just like they wouldn’t do shit when Boko Haram was going village after village raping, murdering and kidnapping they just didn’t give a shit.

Breaking the laws of both your own home nation and another you happen to be visiting tends to have consequences. No matter what happens next, this is probably the end of his life as he knew it. There is a legal way to do this, and no one would have cared if he had done things on the up-and-up.

it always amuses me when people get outraged about an animal being killed and then are like “You deserve to die...go kill yourself” lol wut? Either way seems like his hunt was kind of shady. I’ll also add that I like hunting and partake in it myself, but I never really understood trophy hunters, that’s not what it’s about for me and not what it should be about in my opinion

A few people review places using Google, you see them rated when you view places on maps. It’s not as frequent so I typically read the handful that are there.
Yelp is a gigantic waste of time, when it comes down to it, except to see what’s nearby.

Exactly. For the record, I’m ok with hunting for food, but not for sport.
Is this guy hunting a lion really any different from somebody hunting deer? Bear? Elk? Turkey? Squirrel?
Does he have anything to stand on from a legal perspective of everybody posting false reviews?

The reactions are over the top, for sure, and I agree with you on the trophy hunting. I know a couple people that hunt and keep trophies but the trophies are not the purpose but a bonus, in a sense. They use the meat (and haven’t actually bought from a store in years).
His wife doesn’t like having a deer head in the living room, though.

It is :( it’s so crazy how your life can be so different if you are born somewhere else. Many of those people will be stuck in their situations forever. It makes you appreciate just how much you have.

I find myself torn in this situation, I have a lot of friends and family who work in Southern Africa as Game Rangers or support staff in private and government parks. I have been witness to the horrors of poatching (frankly Rhino poachers and anyone who supports them needs to be put up against a wall and executed IMHO) and so I’m finding it hard to feel sorry for this guy.
Are reactions over the top? Probably, but the fact that this guy has poached in the past probably means he was aware of what he was doing and needs to be punished for it. However if he really was just an unwitting accomplice to the crime does he deserve leniency with his past taken into account?

Yea, I don’t buy that he didn’t know what was going on. They were baiting the lion out of the national park. They may not have known that it was Cecil the lion, but either way what they were doing was quite shady if not illegal
